The RTX 3060TI is well suited for 1440p gaming at high settings for the vast majority of games, but there will always be one that wont play nice with the settings you want, and if this is a game you want to play, then you may not want that card.
So yes I agree that a 3080 or Ti is by no means overkill for 1440p gaming, especially if your monitor is under 32”; you get the best of both worlds. A 3080 will suffice for 1440p 144fps gaming in most titles in the market right now, a 3080ti will all but guarantee at least 144fps at 1440p.
