How long can you leave paint in a Magnum sprayer? ›

I would recommend a few things if you are considering leaving paint in your sprayer. But don't do this for prolonged periods as you could damage your machine and warranty. But overnight or a few hours will be fine.

This sprayer has fully adjustable pressure so you can get a professional finish with paint or stain on decks, fences, sheds, walls, interior projects or exterior house.

Spraying Paint

One gallon of paint will cover about 150 to 200 square feet of wall. It's best to estimate high when spraying on paint. Spraying uses more paint because the sprayer atomizes the paint into tiny droplets. Most of the droplets end up on the surface, but many others drift away.

Thicker paints, such as water-based latex, can clog the sprayer. Combine a half cup of water for every gallon of latex paint in a bucket and stir thoroughly to thin its consistency before using latex paint in an HVLP gun. Pneumatic paint sprayers work with oil-based enamel, acrylic and latex paints.

We just finished spraying our two story home using the Graco X5. And Yes, we used it right out of the can. We did end up thinning it a little bit for some places, but there was really no need to at all....that was for our benefit of making the paint go a little farther.

Rollers are a great option when you need to apply the stain faster, but they can be difficult to work with in hard-to-reach areas. Using a sprayer is a viable option too, but you need to make sure that the sprayer is set to low pressure and you're spraying close to the wood.

If you've got a large surface area, a fence sprayer will help you get the job done quickly. If you're using a paint sprayer, check that the paint is compatible. Ensure you wear a dust mark and goggles, and make sure you've covered the areas surrounding the fence properly, as there will be a little bit of overspray.

How much pressure does a paint spray gun need? Airless sprayers will spray between 1200 to 2500 pounds per square inch (PSI) depending on the tip and paint you are using. To determine the best settings, perform a test spray starting with a lower pressure.

Work from the top down, spraying in long, even strokes and going with the grain of the wood. Keep the spray tip about 12 inches from the surface you're spraying. Pay particular attention to spray into intricate areas such as trim or detailed carvings, and overlap each successive spray pass by approximately 50%.

Do I need to thin paint for airless sprayer? ›

Airless sprayers are very powerful and typically spray paint at around 2000 psi. There is no air involved, and the paint is pumped under pressure through a tiny hole which turns the paint into a mist. Because of this, airless sprayers will spray most things without any thinning at all.

Adjust the Settings

By increasing or decreasing the settings, you can ensure you're applying a silky, smooth finish on the surface of your project. You'll know the settings are correct when the paint droplets are uniform, equally sized and equally spaced with consistent coverage.

However, there may be times when you need to finish your project the next day. In that case you can leave your material in the sprayer over night in a cool dry area. After leaving it overnight make sure to wipe off any dried material that may have dried on the nozzle.

A sprayer should never be left to sit overnight without cleaning. If the same product mixture is to be used the next day, flushing the sprayer system with water should be sufficient. However, if switching products or crops, a more thorough cleaning is needed.

Short 3 days - 3 months

Water left in a paint sprayer will corrode and ruin the pump! Always circulate a storage fluid through the system after cleaning. You can use a "pump preserver" such as Graco Pump Armor or just plain, clean mineral spirits.

Taking the time to properly clean your airless paint sprayer after every use will help keep it in good working condition. Even the best airless paint sprayers will break down without proper care and cleaning. If you find the paint sprayer was put away before being properly cleaned, you will need to check it thoroughly.
