The Plot & Premise Of Undead Unluck

Undead Unluck Trailer, Release Date, Plot, & Latest Updates (1)

The Undead Unluck franchise is an action/comedy shonen series, not unlike Spy x Family, which will also air in the Fall 2023 anime season, though they have major storytelling differences, too. While Spy x Family focuses on the "found family" trope and the Cold War-esque adventures of the Forger household, the Undead Unluck anime is all over the place, not constrained by the domestic bliss of one Ostanian household. The main characters of Undead Unluck will go anywhere and do anything during their action-packed adventures together, and perhaps even travel through time itself.

This anime will appeal to fans of comedy series that use more than witty dialogue to tell a story – anime like Undead Unluck keep viewers both guessing and laughing with an eclectic combination of settings, conflicts, and character designs. Narrative-wise, it's a little less Spy x Family and a little more Gintama, though unlike the latter, Undead Unluck doesn't rely on parodies to build a narrative. Undead Unluck has its own rules, premise, and central conflict, which action anime fans will also enjoy.

Undead Unluck starts small, introducing the 18-year-old heroine Fuuko Izumo, a Japanese girl who has decided that her life is no longer worth living. Her dark thoughts are interrupted when a burly man with something stuck in his forehead barges in on her life, an unnamed fellow who is determined to overcome his own immortality and finally conclude his endless, boring life on his own terms. In someone else's hands, that premise would be grim and dramatic, but Undead Unluck finds tasteful ways to turn death into something silly, a vehicle for wacky shonen-style action.

Most of all, Fuuko and her new friend, whom she dubs Andy for convenience, are both Negators, or people with the supernatural ability to negate the world's various rules. Fuuko can negate the typical rules of luck with bodily contact, and Andy can negate the rules of death, hence his unwanted immortality. Together, Fuuko and Andy will embark on a twisted journey to satisfy their respective desires and learn that the rules of the world, Negators like them, and even God and the end of the world are all interconnected in a greater cosmic game.

Undead Unluck Trailer & Release Date

The Undead Unluck anime will premiere on Hulu.com on October 6th.

The latest and most substantial trailer for Undead Unluck is fast-moving and colorful, throwing viewers right into this action-packed and unpredictable world while barely stopping for breath. That matches the overall tone of this shonen action/comedy series, with protagonist Fuuko Izumo's life being turned upside down the moment she met Andy, who brought all the action and carnage with him. Based on this trailer, Undead Unluck promises to be a fast-moving "act now, explain later" series, perfect for a blend of action and comedy. This won't be a slow-burn, methodical series like My Hero Academia –it will fling viewers right into the deep end, similar to the subversive shonen series Chainsaw Man.

Undead Unluck's trailer begins the same way the original manga did – by depicting heroine Fuuko Izumo finishing her favorite shojo manga, then resolving to end her own life, only for Andy to burst onto the scene and stop her. Andy briefly explains his goal -- to make use of Fuuko's deadly luck negation to finally destroy his immortal body and retire from life, even if Fuuko has no idea what's going on. It's clear from the outset that Negators have supernatural abilities akin to Quirks in My Hero Academia, but where these powers came from and why certain people have them is left a mystery. In the trailer, Andy breathes new life into Fuuko's miserable existence with all-new adventures against friendly and hostile Negators and UMAs alike, beings who break and enforce God's rules, respectively.

The Undead Unluck trailer focuses mostly on the action of the immortal warrior Andy and the chaotic misfortune of his new companion Fuuko Izumo, but the trailer also makes time to hint at the larger plot, by briefly introducing the Union. The Union, led by a blonde woman with a partial helmet over her head, is made up of Negators who have big plans for God's rigid rules, and the reckless Any dragged both himself and Fuuko into the middle of it all. How that greater conflict ties into Andy's quest to finally end his life remains to be seen, but fans might find out when the Undead Unluck anime starts airing.
